Apatite is a stone that comes in many shapes and colours. Many confuse it with topaz, beryl and olivine. This type of stone sometimes takes the form of tourmalines and other calcines. It is difficult to recognise due to its resemblance to a large variety of stones. For centuries, it has been known for its slimming capacities. It is of great use for those who want to lose weight. Its history remains unclear. This crystal has not been associated with any legends for generations. It was first mentioned in 1767. The Spanish naturalist Pedro Francisco Dávila (1713 – 1785) described the mineral and called it a “phosphoric stone”. Some years later, German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 – 1817) examined the subject. Due to the deceptive appearance of the stone, Werner assigned it the name “apatite.” This comes from the Greek “apatao” meaning to deceive. In the last years of the 18th century, mineralogists were able to determine the chemical composition of apatite stone.
Researchers discovered that this type of stone is the only mineral found in the human body. This stone is also present in the bodies of animals such as dinosaurs, and fish. It makes up 65% of our teeth and nails. Various types of rocks, whether metamorphic, magmatic or sedimentary, contain this crystal. Traces of apatite stone were discovered in lunar rocks collected by NASA astronauts throughout the Apollo space program. The IMA or International Mineralogical Association does not acknowledge the name apatite. Indeed, the latter does not constitute a raw mineral in itself. It is a group of minerals, a hexagonal phosphate. The IMA, however, validates the name fluorapatite, which consolidates the most common species of the stone. Sometimes mineralogists discover small quantities of uranium in this type of stone. This component determines the age of the stone.
Under apatite stone, we note a set of raw hexagonal phosphate containing Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH). The IMA recognises 3 species including Chlorapatite Ca5(PO4)3Cl, Fluorapatite Ca5(PO4)3F and Hydroxyapatite Ca5(PO4)3(OH). The polytypes of the stone are enhanced by ancient monoclinical variants previously considered as simple species. For example, clinohydroxyapatite can be distinguished. The formula for this stone is Ca5(PO4)3 (OH, Cl, F), silicon oxide. It has a hexagonal crystal system. The stone is thus among the hexagonal phosphate group. The different varieties contain isolated PO4 tetrahedrons and Ca2+ ions in coordination 9. The PO4 tetrahedron is replaced by a CO3OH or CO3F group with carbonate-apatites. Apatite stone is at the top of a set of isostructural minerals in an A5(XO4)3Zq formula. At one end, strontium, cerium, manganese, yttrium and lead replace calcium. On the other end, arsenic, vanadium, sulphur and silicon replace phosphorus. These minerals differ in their hexagonal or pseudo-hexagonal monoclinical aspects. They contain arsenates and vanadates. The group is divided into apatite and pyromorphite.
