Bronzite stone finds its origin in the Greco-Latin world, under the name of enstatite, a term inspired by the Greek « enstates », which means «opponent». It takes its name from its particular colour, resembling bronze. The Romans believed in the therapeutic and protective power of bronzite. They used it in powder form, to protect themselves from physical disorders and mental confusion. They also used it as a protective amulet, because they believed it had magical, even sibylline power. Today, it is highly appreciated in goldsmith’s and silversmith’s art, and is used to decorate different jewels: piece of jewellery, bracelets, or pendants.

Bronzite is a mineral that belongs to the category of silicates. It differs from stones of the same mineral family in that it contains a large amount of iron and magnesium silicate. Scientifically, it is an altered enstatite. The “variety” of this stone includes about 12 to 30% iron oxide. With golden glints, it results from the meteorological and geological conditions acting on the iron and silica composing the stone. It can be polished round or cabochon shaped, and can have a style called “cat’s eye”, characterized by a beautiful gold glittery reflection that glides across the surface of the stone, depending on the direction of artificial light or sunlight. This brown stone’s lustre varies from pearly to pale. It is an intermediate variety of enstatite and hypersthene, obtained by the alteration of the latter, having the same chemical composition. The difference between the two lies in their crystalline system. The most important deposits are located in Austria, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Burma. It is composed of rare short, greenish-brown or blackish prismatic crystals in the form of irregular grains or compact masses. Belonging to the Pyroxene family, it consists of iron and magnesium. It has the following chemical composition: (Mg, Fe)2 Si2 O6 or (Mg, Fe) Si O3 (magnesium iron silicate). It belongs to inosilicate class VIII (pyroxenes). Bronzite stone is medium hard and heavy. It is translucent with a bronzed submetallic lustre. The higher its iron content, the faster it will melt. It is acid-resistant. Its density is between 3.2 and 3.5. As for its hardness, it ranges from 5 to 6 on Mohs scale. Endowed with an orthorhombic crystal system, this stone offers several qualities.
