Fuchsite stone belongs to the Muscovite family, which derives from the Latin translation of “vitrum muscoviticum” (Moscow glass). This name was used as early as 1794 by Johann Gottfried Schmeisser (1767-1837), a German pharmacist and mineralogist, in his book “Mineralogical System”. But it was James Dwight Dana (1813-1895), an American geologist, mineralogist and zoologist, who officially gave it this name in 1850. This mineral was frequently used in Medieval Russia as an alternative to glass for furnace windows. This use was then revived in England during the sixteenth century. George Turberville (~1540 – ~1597), an English poet, mentioned it in a correspondence with Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1568. This name is validated by the IMA (International Mineralogical Association). Fuchsite (which is a variety of muscovite) is named after the German chemist and mineralogist Johann Nepomukvon Fuchs (1774-1856). Named so in 1842 by Karl F. Emil vonSchafhäutl (1803-1890), a German naturalist, this name is not accepted by the IMA. Verdite (also called African jade) is a variety of fuchsite.
It takes its name from the Latin “viridis”, meaning “green”, pfor its specific colour. This mineral is actually a rock that also consists of albite, chlorite, corundum, quartz, diaspore, rutile, margarite and talc. This name is not accepted by the IMA. Muscovite dates back at least to Antiquity. Pliny the Elder (23-79 A.D.), a Roman writer and naturalist, already mentions it in his “Natural History”, under the name “lapis Specularis”, meaning “stone mirror”. He tells us that “cHe tells us that”. Note also that this mineral could sometimes be called “cat’s silver”, because of its silvery colour. The peoples of southern Africa have long appreciated verdite because it comes from their homes and has been used for centuries in the form of amulets and ornamental stones. It is very well known in African works of art. It is usually carved in human or animal forms. Fuchsite stone has a high amount of chromium. Being transparent to translucent, the shade of muscovite ranges from colourless to white, grey, silvery white, brownish white, and greenish white. The green quartzites of the Gour Oumelalen series (quartzites from Algeria) owe their colour to the presence of a fuchsite disseminated in the rock.
Fuchsite is a variety of chromogenic muscovite mica. Mica is a silicate constituting volcanic and metamorphic rocks. The composition of fuchsite stone is as follows: (K,Na)(Al,Cr,Fe)2(Si,Al)3O10(OH,F)3. It is often called “fairy crystal”. It differs from other gemstones by its sparkling flecks which are often compared to stardust.
Its connection to the sky comes from its radiant appearance, which makes it look like it belongs to another world. Fuchsite, a variety of Muscovite, is mainly found in Brazil, India and Russia.
