MOKAÏTE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHOTHERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES AND VIRTUES

HISTORY OF MOKAITE STONE

In Aboriginal language, the word “mookaïte” means “white water”. Mokaite stone was named after Mooka Creek, the place where it was discovered. This mineral is known by various names such as: Windalia radiolarite, mookite, mookalite, mookerite, moakite, moukalite and Moukaite. For the aborigines of Australia, mokaïte has a great spiritual value as it is said to be charged with numerous magical virtues such as the ability to heal. This natural birthstone, for those born in early summer (birth between June 21 and July 21), has a very attractive appearance, and is widely used today in the manufacture of fine jewellery and ornamental pendants. Its name derives from its origin in Australia. It is defined as silicatised porcelain that can be found over a large part of the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia. There is also opalite and chalcedony found there. Mokaïte is a fossilized sedimentary rock located under the river bed where silica has mixed with white clay and petrified. It has a coffee colour ranging from yellow, through red, purple, and up to dark brown.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF MOKAÏTE STONE

Mokaïte jasper or Australian jasper is an original variety from Australia. It is considered quite special. Its colours are unique as they go from dark red to white, and can even go through yellow and brown, arranged in several layers. From a chemical point of view, it contains silica with inclusions of metals and minerals that define the possible shades of the stone. Its crystal system is trigonal. With a conchoidal break, it has a white line. The brilliance of this natural mineral can go from shiny to matt. Its density is 2.75 and its hardness 6.5 to 7 on Mohs scale. The most important deposits of mokaïte are found in Australia, but also in other countries such as South Africa and Brazil. It consists of silicon oxide, like agate, which leads to confusion between the two. However, they are easily differentiated as mokaïte is granular and opaque, whereas agate is rather crystalline. There is a great variety of them with a wide range of colours: black, green, yellow.
