The history of zoisite stone is very recent. This mineral was discovered in the 18th century by the Austrian naturalist and mineralogist Sigmund Zois, Baron von Edelstein, who made his fortune in the iron trade in Ljubljana, the present capital of Slovenia. This passionate geologist owned mines and collected minerals; his collection can be seen in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. He sent samples of stones collected in the territory of Carinthia (on the border between Austria and Slovenia) to Abraham Gottlob Werner, a German mineralogist and geologist. Werner described the Zoisite stone ; il and named it after Sigmund Zois.
Zoisite stone ranges with a variety of shapes that differ in appearance.
On a geological level, zoisite belongs to the group of silicates. It can produce striated crystals of various sizes, the largest being up to 10 cm². It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which corresponds to moderate hardness.
The main deposits in the world are in Belgium, France, Austria (where it was discovered), Canada, Pakistan, Namibia, Kenya and Tanzania. The colour differs according to each deposit, depending on the minerals associated with the zoisite.
